A Generation Inspired- Maybe!!!!!

So that’s it – the Closing Ceremony is over (No Macca – wahoo) The flame has gone out, no more sitting glued to the T.V- so now what? Well first we’ve got to deal with the press post-mortem of what went wrong. To be honest they are going to have to dig deep to find much? I’ve been lucky enough to see some of the Olympics first hand. The Ladies Marathon, the Wendy-ball semi-finals at Old Trafford and we had a day at Hyde Park Live. I’ve no complaints about any of it. Despite all the doom and gloom forecast before hand, the whole thing was a fantastic , very well organised experience. So just what were the best bits……….

Well, on a personal level the day in London watching the Marathon was awesome. It was great to see what we miss when we run the London Marathon- I can’t believe how fast they go. The atmosphere was brilliant and the way people waited for the very last injured athlete to finish some 20 minutes after everyone else had done was respect for others at its very best. Then there was ‘that Saturday night’ who will ever forget it.

As a Mum, being able to share the Olympics with my son has been truly memorable. Granted, I’m not too chuffed with his new found love for beach Volleyball- maybe because it’s not the ball skills he’s interested in but we have watched sports together that we never normally would. Horses dancing – whatever next!! I’m not too sure what he thought to the female boxing we watched but he cheered as loudly as everyone else when Nicola Adams won the semi-final!!! We also saw the first ever female Saudi athlete compete that day- Hyde Park was on it’s feet as she finished a whole lap behind everyone else- hopefully come Rio there will be more Saudi women getting their chance.

The Olympics and the Jubilee seem to have made Britain great again- will it last, who knows but it will be sad if nothing comes from all that has gone on. So can we inspire a generation? Well we can if we are all prepared to do our bit- if we sit back and assume someone else will sort it, then it will never happen.

And Now The End is Near………………Or is it???

So that’s it – just the Closing ceremony to go and then we’re done – well for the next 17 days then the Paralympics start – hope it gets the same recognition.

Just a quick blog as I want to watch the end – might as well I’ve sat here for hours watching everything else – it’s been awesome and I for one am going to miss it.

Anyway it’s been a fab day, Hubby and I made the most of some child free time and headed out on the mountain bikes -loved every minute of it – we will definitely be doing it again. Watch this space. Best of all today the mighty Wakefield Trinity beat St Helens with the last kick of the game – the giant killing continues. WTID.

Olympics has been Awesome

Paralympics coming

Bring it on

Planes, Trains and Automobiles……..Oh and a FlyMo!

Well to be honest it was more bikes, cars and helicopters than Planes, trains and automobiles but that would have been a crap title – but all in all it’s been one of the most bizarre Saturdays we’ve had in while.

The morning started with Hubby diving out of bed to go out to play on his new bike – I know, I know he already had a perfectly good bike (see link to previous blog) but that was the problem it was too good to be let out of the cellar. So the bubble wrap bike is now up for sale and we’ve now got two more bikes in the house – one for off-road and one for on (!) I have one bike that does both and was a fraction of the cost but……………..Boy’s and their toys!!!https://jacksmumontherun.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=271&action=edit

Anyway this new toy meant he came back a happy boy (well middle-aged dude!) this morning. The off-road route I sent him on meant he had loads of fun – so much fun that we’re off to do it together tomorrow morning (we’re child free) not on the same bike – I’m not having a crog on a mountain bike thank you very much!!! Talking of mountain bikes – did you see them loonies in the Olympics today and I thought the BMX  lot were mental!!

So biking done we nipped out to do a few jobs and ended up buying a car. Don’t get me wrong one of the jobs on our list was to go looking at cars – but not buy one. It’s a bit of a saga to be honest but to shorten it for you……….Once upon a time I had a lovely car,Colin the Corsa. Colin was getting on a bit so Hubby sold him and bought Peter the Peugeot – nasty Peter. I hated him! A few weeks ago Colin came back on the market, someone wanted to buy Peter (are you keeping up) so Colin came home!!! Sadly the buyer of Peter changed her mind (boo) and we haven’t sold him yet. On Tuesday Colin left my life for the second time. Naffed off – not kidding. Anyway today we went to look at other options…..Archie the Aygo will be with us on Monday!!!!

As I said earlier, we’re child free at the moment. Jack was due to go paintballing tomorrow for a friend’s birthday but then he was invited to go stay tonight and get this – go for a flight in a helicopter. Eek! OTT birthday

I thought but oh no. Birthday boy’s dad flies all the time. ‘Posh People alert’ I thought, but no, down to earth normal people. Granted, my house and garden would fit in their shed, but there was no need for airs and graces – not that I can do airs and graces. I am what I am…………….Bit scary watching your son taking off in a helicopter – even scarier watching your Hubby have a go- he can’t stand on top of the step ladders without feeling giddy!!

So have hubby and I made the most of a child free night. Er, well come on do you really think we were going to go out with the Olympics on – no chance. So we’ve watched Mo Fly, the Jamaicans whoop the Americans (get in) gold in the boxing and after all that Tom Daley’s had to deal with he brought home the bronze – Go Team GB

What a super Saturday

Mountain Biking with the Hubby in the morning

Bring it on

Guess What……………………….

Well it’s fair to say I felt a lot livelier today, however ‘Asda Big Shop’ and the sudden summer weather (I’m crap at running when it’s warm!) put pay to me running anywhere near the distance I intended. In fact had it not been for the Olympics I probably wouldn’t have gone at all. But Joe Pavey’s run in the 5000m pushed me into it. I ‘m glad I went. For the first time since my iron infused comeback I felt like I had a decent run. Granted it was only 2 1/2 mile but I did it in less than 22 1/2 minutes- not bad to say I could still taste the Chicken Enchilada I’d eaten less than 2 hours earlier – bet Paula Radcliffe never had timing issues with her meals!! The comeback is definitely on.

Just a little mention for my favourite topic – yep, Olympic watching has still taken up most of the day. I’m slightly baffled by the press moaning that today hasn’t been such a good day. Granted we didn’t pick up some Golds we expected to win but there has still been plenty of silver and bronze’s and lots of PB’s to celebrate. And let’s be honest that BMX thing boils down to who copes best on the day – are they stark raving mad – talk about taking your life in your hands. I don’t think I’ll be trying it anytime soon. Apparently the mountain biking starts tomorrow – can’t wait to see what that’s all about!!

No doubt tomorrows press will be full of the mens  GB 4 x 100m team cocking in up in the baton change, but come on there were a couple of novices in that team and to change a baton while running at silly speeds is not easy. I remember doing it at school (slowly) yes we did real sport in my day – well apart from Primary School when we had to roll round being a leaf blowing in the wind. Believe it or not they still do the same thing only they updated it to washing on a line – I’m not kidding. I did it on a P.E course last year. Then there was the giraffes can’t dance lesson………..sorry I’m rambling again. but you do wonder how we win anything in the Olympics teaching stuff  like that in P.E!!

2.5 miles in 22 minutes and 22 secs

Queen of Speed (I don’t think!)

Just for a Change ……….The Olympics!!!

So what a few days it has been and I can honestly say I’ve loved every minute of it. I know that there have been those who have questioned the whole Olympic thing but you only need to go to London and soak up all that’s going on( people are even talking to one another on the tube – unheard of usually) to know it’s gone better than anyone imagined and I’m sure the Paralympics will be just as succesful. Will it inspire a generation – only time will tell, my only hope is that all the facilities that have been built will be put to good use  and not left empty like in other countries. Hopefully the government has now had the kick up the arse it needs and real P.E will be heading back to schools anytime soon – but I won’t go on about P.E it’s a real bug bare of mine – I’ll save it for another blog.

It’s fair to say I’ve watched sports that I’ve never really seen before and I’ve got to say the Female Wendy-ball (football) that I watched at Old Trafford was actually quite good. Don’t get me wrong some of the kicking and heading was a bit, well…..well it was shit. But boy did they lay into one another and I don’t mean’ handbags at ten paces kinda stuff’ they really had a go and there was none of this diving like submarine type stuff that their male counterparts do – well maybe a little bit. Only downside of the whole night was that we opted to cheer for Canada and the flaming Americans won – the ref made sure they did. Cheating in the Olympics – surely not!!  Still it was a brilliant night and from a rugby league girl that truly is a compliment.

Yesterday, after trying every possible option to get in the Olympic Park, we failed. Jack and I headed to Hyde Park to watch some of the day’s action on the big screens – another fab day- the atmosphere was electric. It’s hard to describe really, but everyone laughs and jokes with one another, all talking about how good the Brits are and asking why us in Yorkshire are doing so well – I didn’t gloat – honest!! One of the best bits had to be watching Nicola Adams (another Yorkshire Lass) batter her opponent to get to the finals. Female Boxing – whatever next. Not what I was expecting – they really go for it. Jack was some what bemused – think he was expecting girlie slapping and handbags – but he wore his union Jack Flag ( wore it – it buried him!) with pride and cheered just as loudly a everyone else. Despite his disappointment at failing to get in the Olympic park ( at least he did get to go in when I did my Olympic Park Run – but I think he wanted to see it finished!) he loved the day out and hopefully when he’s older he will be able to look back and say  he was part of it.

Only three days left now – then what will we do? The hunt for Paralympic tickets is on!!

Olympic exhaustion today

Feeling livelier tomorrow

Bring it On

Just a quick one………………..

So we’re back after a fab day out in London and I didn’t get on the wrong tube once – impressed – well I am!! We still didn’t make it into the Olympic park but watching on the big screen in Hyde Park was almost good enough. Jack was somewhat bemused by the female boxing – think he was quite disappointed that no girlie slapping was involved – believe me, there was nothing girlie about it!!!

So the feet are throbbing (again) and I can see a lazy day coming on tomorrow (again) but at least we’ve been part of it.

Survived in the Big City

Full Details tomorrow

Bring it on!!

Catch up time………..Well some of it!

finally a bit of a chance for a catch up but only a short one – I need to catch up with my beauty sleep before Jack and I head to London to enjoy the Olympics.

So let’s go back to Saturday night- what  a night that was- Team GB rocked and the whole country seemed to be watching. It was awesome-  the only downside was I didn’t get my early night prior to getting up at five for our trip to London to watch the Women’s Marathon – but who cares- we’ll never get to see a home Olympics again- got to make the most of it.

Sunday was brilliant, I don’t really know where to start. The weather failed to dampen the spirits of all who watched- and boy were there some people watching! I now know that in order to improve my marathon running I need to wear pants and crop top, long socks and copious amounts of pink tape on my arse- go down well in Wakefield that!!! But if it makes me as fast as them I’ll try anything. I’ve a long way to go to achieve the stick thin look though. Some of those girls were seriously in need of a plate of pie n chips!!!

Once the Marathon was over we headed over to Stratford to see what was going on around the Olympic park. top-tip- go. You may not be able to see the events in the park but you still know what’s going on and the place is buzzing. Mind you the train home was buzzing – but perhaps that was the large wine we had in the champagne bar before we left.

Last night saw me at Old Trafford on a school trip – female Wendy-Ball. Hate to say it but it was really good. I’ll give you all the goss on that in the next catch-up.

Early Night needed

Hyde Park Live tomorrow

Bring it on

Sorry but………………

I know, I know. I promised you a catch-up blog and it hasn’t happened. I slept late, spent the morning/afternoon sorting another trip to London -I’m taking Jack – he needs to see London in its Olympic splendour and I’ve just got back from Olympic Wendy-ball – Me!!! Anyway – full catch-up tomorrow – honest!!

Wendy-Ball – right night!

Still Loving the Olympics

Bring it on

Er ……………..More Olympics

One more sleep  – yep one more sleep and then its off to the Capital City – The Olympic Marathon beckons and I can’t bleeding wait – I’m even more excited now cos I’m in a virtual queue for tickets to the Olympic park – not a cat in hells chance of getting a ticket but its nice to be virtually there -GO ON JESS GO ON JESS GO GO GO GO WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO –  sorry but I’m just watching the Heptathlon – SHE’S ONLY GONE AND WON!

What a games this has been and tomorrow I’ll be part of it – sorry but I’m going to have to go Jess has won – long jumps looking good and Mo’s about to run – catch up tomorrow.

Great Day

Same again tomorrow

Bring it on

Er…..More Olympics

So this time last week we were sat staring at the TV (well Jack and I were – Ernie was laying in the wardrobe!!) and wondering if this London Olympics was going to be all it claimed to be or a total disaster. Fast forward a week and it has blown all expectations out of the water – it’s been awesome – all of it. A real two fingers to the British Press who haven’t had a good thing to say about the Olympics for months.

From Boris hanging on his highwire to every effort by every athlete – it’s been ace and now there are only 2 more sleeps until I get to go see some real live action close up. Yes come Sunday my friend and I are heading to the capital at stupid o clock so we can go watch the women’s marathon – can’t wait. The flags are ready as is my team GB top, hoodie and anything else I buy team GB wise before Sunday – maybe Jack suggestion of face paint and foam finger is a tad OTT but I can’t deny I’m tempted!!!

Monday see’s me at Old Trafford for female Wendy-Ball (me at a football game – priceless) hopefully I’ll manage to contain myself and remember not to shout ‘knock on’ and ‘bang him her’ – rugby league kinda girl me!!  Who to cheer for though – Canada or USA!!

Just how well are Team GB doing

More of the same tomorrow

Bring it on
